At OIS, we value languages and we firmly believe that learning another language opens a window to another world and another culture. It is the initial step in embracing open-mindedness, respect, and international communication.
Our language curriculum is meticulously crafted to nurture proficiency in all four language skills: writing, reading, listening, and speaking, ensuring that our students possess a robust skill set for success in secondary education and beyond.
We follow an interactive, fun, and engaging educational approach that places the learner at the heart of the learning journey. Our lessons are tailored and structured to empower our dynamic learners in honing their language abilities.
We are strong advocates of the notion that language is the essence of communication, which is why our educators are wholeheartedly committed to fostering student engagement and dialogue in every lesson.
Based on the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), our lessons are tailored to prepare students from Year 1 to Secondary for success in IGCSE French Foreign Language. Our teachers use a communicative approach, focusing on engaging activities, games, and exercises to teach oral and written skills, as well as to develop vocabulary and grammar. The curriculum spans from A1.1 to B1, and each year, students deepen their language knowledge, becoming more independent and efficient communicators.
From Y1 to Y9, this course is intended for students who speak multiple languages at home, with French being one of them. The course is designed to help students strengthen and further develop their French language skills in preparation for the IGCSE French First Language course. It covers the study of French literature, in-depth grammar, and vocabulary skills. Additionally, it includes an exploration of Francophone culture, allowing students to connect with one of their cultures and discover the Francophone world.
We also have a programme designed primarily to meet the needs of non-native speakers who wish to develop their Vietnamese language skills while living in the country. This is offered at beginner, intermediate and advanced levels, based on their fluency year level. We focus on the development of language that will be more helpful to foreign children learning to live and get by in our host country.
Vietnamese Nationals are required to take Vietnamese Language and Vietnamese Culture using materials drawn from the MOET (Vietnamese government) national curriculum. We use a range of techniques to engage the students with the materials using Odyssey pedagogy.
Odyssey offers English as an Additional Language (EAL) to students who are new to English as a language of instruction or who have learned in English before but still require some extra help to fully access the curriculum.
The school will inform parents of their child’s EAL needs and will explain why a decision has been made.
